College Softball Returns to the Vet Alabaster Newsletter, May 2007 With the weather warming and spring in the air, there’s no better time to get out to the ballpark. This May, the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) gives you a great opportunity to do just that. For
the third consecutive year, the ACCC will be hosting its annual fast-pitch
softball championship at Veterans Park in Alabaster. According to Karen Whittington, athletic manager for the Parks & Recreation Department, the tournament is scheduled for May 4-8, and as always, it will feature some high-quality competition. The ACCC is comprised of 18 teams from various two-year schools around the state, including Jefferson State, Central Alabama, and Faulkner State. Only the top 12 teams, however, advance to the tournament in Alabaster. This year the conference has had at least two teams ranked in the national NJCAA poll: Wallace State-Hanceville and Wallace Community College-Dothan. As of March 21, Central Alabama was also receiving votes, with an impressive 25-4 record. For the past two years, Alabaster has proven to be a great site for the event, as it’s centrally located and has topnotch facilities. Conference commissioner Al Cox spoke highly of Veterans Park during last year’s tournament. “The parks and the amenities are ideal. We have trainers here. We have security here. It’s just a perfect location, and we’re tickled to death to be here,” Cox said. Last year, Central Alabama claimed the tournament crown by defeating Wallace State-Hanceville 8-1 in the championship game. Led by sophomore pitcher and tournament MVP Ashlee Gaskin, the Lady Trojans will attempt to win it again this year. So
come out to the ballpark this May and see for yourself what keeps this fun and
action-packed tournament coming back to Alabaster. |
